On Easter Sunday, April 12, 2026, in the shadow of Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, Ukrainians gathered to celebrate not just the Resurrection — but millennia of living tradition that no war has been able to erase.
This video captures over an hour of authentic Ukrainian Easter folk culture: volochebnyky carol singers from the Chernihiv region going house to house with the ancient greeting “Khrystos Voskres” (Christ is Risen); the kryvyi tanets — the “crooked dance,” one of Ukraine’s most widespread folk dances — winding through the grounds of the cathedral; circle games including Rizoчka and the Yashchur ritual courtship song; and the blessing of pysanky, the hand-painted Easter eggs carrying symbols of the Tree of Life and protection against discord.
A speaker near the cathedral steps put it plainly in English: “This is a fight for civilization itself — the dignity of humanity, the dignity of sovereignty.”
These traditions are not performance. They are resistance, memory, and joy — all at once.
