Ukrainian journalist Julia Kalashnyk joins me from Kyiv. She worked with Italian media for years after living in Italy for 13 years, came back to Ukraine in 2016, and since the full-scale invasion has worked with international outlets. She is now making documentaries.

Julia describes the Kharkiv teacher she has followed for three years, who spent 42 days under occupation and then held her class together online after her students scattered across the world. She recounts running for a Kharkiv metro station with one shoe on as a glide bomb hit, and the short warning times in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, where her mother lives.

I talk about my film on Anastasia and Artur Shkuel and Vladislav and Violetta, and we compare notes on blackouts, keeping food cold on the balcony, explaining war life to people abroad, and the price Ukrainians pay for resistance.
